In the north, we say “Moin” – and the #MOIN model region for industrial mathematics is now also associated with a success story that the entire region can be proud of. The transfer project has won the prestigious NordWest Award 2024, receiving significant recognition for its work and vision. The prize, which has been awarded every two years since 2014 by the Metropolitan Region Northwest, recognizes outstanding projects that sustainably advance the region. This year, the award went to #MOIN – and rightly so!

Mathematics for everyone – accessible and innovative

Mathematics tends to have a difficult reputation, especially in industry. Many see it as too complicated, too abstract. This is exactly what #MOIN hopes to change. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the “T!Raum – TransferRäume für die Zukunft von Regionen” program, the initiative aims to make industrial mathematics accessible to everyone — from schools to industry, from science to politics.
#MOIN wants to show that (industrial) mathematics is accessible to everyone and full of opportunities,” explains Professor Christof Büskens, who heads the project. Whether at school, in companies or in politics – mathematics offers opportunities that can be seized.

Regional networking – from schools to industry

A major success of the project lies in its far-reaching exchange with the community. #MOIN brings together people from education, culture, politics, and business to show how mathematics can impact real change not only in theory, but also in practice. This way, the initiative plays a central role in the digital transformation of the region – from the further development of schools to technological innovations in industry.

“The NordWest Award is a great recognition of our work and encourages us in our efforts to establish (industrial) mathematics as an essential part of our society and economy, to continue developing innovative solutions and to make our contribution to the positive development of the region,” says Professor Büskens. The prize money of 6,500 euros and the image film, which is part of the winnings, will help the project to reach even more people.

Pioneering impulses from the region

Winning the NordWest Award shows once again that the Northwest is a place of innovation. The #MOIN model region for industrial mathematics is a flagship project that shows how important it is to understand mathematics as an essential part of our society and economy. Thanks to the initiative, the region will be in an even stronger position to master the challenges of the future — with ideas that will radiate far beyond the borders of the Northwest.

The DIGITAL HUB INDUSTRY would also like to congratulate #MOIN on this great success and is delighted to be part of a region that impresses with its innovative strength and vision for the future. We are looking forward to the further inspiration that #MOIN will provide for the digital transformation and the close networking of business, education and society!
