Resilient energy systems

Interdisciplinary research for resilient energy systems

Who are we?

The research work of the Resilient Energy Systems department concentrates on studying and supporting transformation processes in the future energy systems.
Our research focuses on the approach of transformative resilience, the ability to use profound changes or disruptive events in the energy system as an opportunity to design sustainable and resilient structures. In doing so, we develop approaches to create less vulnerable systems — not only in response to these disruptions, but also preventively through early strategic design.
One focus of our work is the data-based analysis of sociotechnical vulnerabilities and risks, as well as the model-based forecasting of future scenarios for urban and industrial infrastructures.

What do we do at the DHI?

We develop tools for energy system modelling and optimization as well as digital planning tools to simulate the effects of various activities on resilience and sustainability in the energy system. In collaboration with the transformation stakeholders, we create a profound decision-making basis for the complex transformation of the energy system. Urban twins offer a promising starting point for capturing complex interrelationships and supporting transformation stakeholders in complex decision-making processes.

In the Virtual Transformation Lab (VTL) at the DHI, we offer an environment in which we can work on these topics in a collaborative way with different stakeholder groups. The VTL offers both classic analog as well as digital interactive tools (video wall & touch tables) to provide the best possible support for different phases of transformation processes.
